Changuu Island also known as Prison Island lies about 30 minutes by boat from Stone Town. This half-day private guided tour takes you over to the island to discover its historic past and present, including the giant tortoises that roam around.

The island was formerly owned by an Arab and meant to be used for confinement of refractory slaves but no prisoners were ever housed; on a contrary the island became a quarantine station for yellow fever epidemics.

With a name like Prison Island, you'll be surprised at what a little slice of heaven this is. Now a conservation site for rare giant tortoise, you can meet the creatures, then chill out on the beach and take a dip in the Indian Ocean before catching the boat back to shore.
